Sustain

  • Project

The project entitled "Integrated management of insect infestations in stored animal feed with "green" methods" (acronym SUSTAIN, KMP6-0088130) of the Operational Program of the Region of Central Macedonia 2014-2020 "RESEARCH INNOVATION PROJECTS" is financed by the Greek State and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union and its duration is 18 months.

    Aim of the project

The aim of the project is to evaluate new, low-risk, alternative methods to combat insect infestations of stored animal feed. The methods that will be applied and evaluated are: a) the method of preventing the meeting of the two sexes using pheromone vaporizers or otherwise the method of sexual confusion, also known internationally as mating disruption (MD), b) diatomaceous earth and c) the "modified atmosphere" method, which is safe, easy to implement, does not need any specific approval and licensing process and leaves no residues.

    Work packages

EE1: Current Situation Analysis – Overview

EE2: Application of the technique of preventing the meeting of the two sexes in the storage facilities of ELVIZ, to deal with the Lepidoptera that attack the stored animal feed

EE3: Evaluation of the action of selected diatomaceous earths to reduce the insect load of stored animal feed

EE4: Evaluation of nitrogen application (modified atmosphere) to reduce the insect load of stored forages

    Expected Results

    1. Limiting the phenomenon of the development of resistance of storage insects, as well as the production of completely insect-free feed.
    2. The limitation and quantitative and qualitative degradation of products due to insect infestations in the warehouse.
    3. Further improvement of the competitiveness of ELVIZ, through more effective reduction of entomological problems.
    4. New techniques of direct utility in specific types of products.
    5. New management system, according to the principles of using non-chemical methods.
    6. The resulting knowledge is expected to be used as a model in the case of other products by adapting the innovative algorithms.
    7. The protocols to be developed are a dynamic standard, capable of adapting to the circumstances at each stage of storage and processing.
    8. Development of a methodology to optimize quality, performance, time and cost in the animal feed industry.
